Dental Cleanings + Exams
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends dental visits at least twice per year. Regular exams and professional cleanings can help to ensure optimal oral health. At Crescent Family Dentistry, our team consistently provides high-quality dental cleanings and thorough preventive exams.
Professional cleanings rid the teeth of harmful plaque and tartar build-up. This is important for preventing tooth decay, periodontal disease, and other oral health issues. Additionally, a professional cleaning by our hygienist may remove some surface stains. This can help keep your teeth looking whiter and brighter.
During your appointment, we will also:
- evaluate your overall oral health
- discuss oral hygiene practices and habits
- check your bite and jaw for any issues
- evaluate your risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and others
- evaluate existing tooth restorations
- perform a thorough oral cancer exam and evaluate gums and tissue for any pathology
- take dental x-rays as necessary
Oral Cancer Screenings
In the United States alone, one adult dies every hour from oral cancers. Oral Cancer is the 9th most common cancer in South Carolina. South Carolina ranks 2nd in the nation for deaths from oral cancer. When oral cancers are identified in early stages, treatment can begin more quickly. In early stages, treatment has a higher rate of success and is less invasive. In more advanced stages, oral cancers are more likely to have spread to other areas and need complex treatment.
Dr. Simpson recommends having an oral cancer screening at least once each year. Regular screenings can help ensure early detection of any potential cancers.
During your oral cancer screening, Dr. Simpson will check for any abnormalities. We will closely examine your mouth, throat, lips, gums, and tongue. Through evaluation with her 3-D Cone Beam X-Ray, Dr. Simpson will be better equipped to note abnormalities or changes in your jaw bone and teeth that otherwise would not be detected with visual exam alone.
Sedation Dentistry
Sedation Dentistry uses medication to help you relax for a better dental care experience. It can be especially helpful for patients with severe dental anxiety. It is our desire to ease your fears through building trust and treating you with gentle care. Despite our best efforts, we understand that fears are real and sometimes require oral medication for maximum comfort. We will discuss options with you after careful review of your health history and dental needs.
At Crescent Family Dentistry, we offer Nitrous Oxide for patients who may benefit from its use.
Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a mild dental sedation technique that is safe and effective. Once inhaled, it induces a state of mild relaxation. It also reduces sensitivity to pain. Nitrous Oxide is safe for most patients, regardless of age. Following treatment, oxygen is used to neutralize the effects of the nitrous oxide. Once this is complete, you will be fully alert and able to drive yourself home.
